The Subsídio por Morte from Segurança Social is 1,611.39 EUR (3 x IAS of 537.13 EUR), if the deceased had at least 36 months of contributions or was a pensioner. Request it within 180 days of the death registration. Whoever paid the funeral without being entitled to the subsidy can claim a reimbursement of funeral expenses (up to 3 x IAS) within 90 days.
Every funeral home must also offer a basic funeral social at a regulated maximum price of 481 EUR (pine coffin, transport and the agency's technical services), plus the cemetery fee. No proof of financial need is required. Some municipalities separately offer support for families in financial difficulty.
How to save on funeral costs
- Always get written quotes from at least 2-3 funeral homes
- You are not obligated to use the funeral home present at the hospital
- Cremation is generally less expensive than burial
- Municipal cemeteries are usually cheaper than private ones
- Check if the deceased had funeral insurance (seguro funeral) or if their employer offered this benefit
