How much does a coffin cost in Portugal?
Coffin prices by type and material
The coffin is often the largest single item in a funeral quote. Prices depend mainly on the wood, the finish and the fittings (handles and ornaments). Reference prices in Portugal:
| Type of coffin | Typical price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Plain pine (social funeral) | included in the 481 EUR | Lined pine or equivalent coffin, with fittings, sheet, pillow and cloth |
| Standard pine or beech | 200 - 600 EUR | The most common choice for economical funerals |
| Solid wood (oak, chestnut) | 600 - 1,500 EUR | Varnished finish, padded interior |
| Premium (mahogany, walnut) | 1,500 - 3,000+ EUR | Hardwoods, worked fittings |
| Cremation coffin | 150 - 400 EUR | Simple models without metal parts |
| Eco coffin (cardboard, wicker, untreated wood) | 150 - 500 EUR | Biodegradable options |
| Urn for ashes | 50 - 400 EUR | Metal, ceramic, wood or biodegradable materials |
Tip: the funeral home must show you options in several price ranges. Asking for the full catalogue, not just the models on display, can save hundreds of euros.
The social funeral: 481 EUR, for anyone, at any funeral home
What is included
The social funeral (funeral social) is a basic service with a regulated maximum price of 481 EUR, set each October by the Directorate-General for the Economy (DGE) under article 119 of Decree-Law 10/2015. It includes:
- ✓ Pine or equivalent coffin, lined, with fittings, sheet, pillow and cloth
- ✓ Preparation and dressing of the body
- ✓ Individual hearse transport (local)
- ✓ The agency's technical and administrative services needed for the funeral
What is not included
- ✗ The cemetery or crematorium fee charged by the municipality
- ✗ Premium or personalised coffins
- ✗ Flowers, wreaths and newspaper notices
- ✗ Headstone, embalming, long-distance transport
Anything added on top is charged at the agency's normal prices, so ask for the extras to be itemised separately.
How to request it
- → Go to any funeral home: all of them are legally obliged to offer this option and cannot refuse it
- → Ask expressly for the "funeral social", using those words, so that the regulated price applies
- → No means test: it is a right of every person, whatever their income; municipal aid for families in need is a separate scheme
- → Ask for a written quote: the itemised total cannot exceed 481 EUR, plus the cemetery fee
- → The death subsidy of 1,611.39 EUR can be combined with the social funeral, which leaves most families with money to spare
Burial or cremation: cost comparison
Burial (inumação)
- → Funeral service and coffin: 1,000 - 3,000 EUR
- → Grave concession: 200 - 5,000 EUR (temporary graves are cheaper; perpetual concessions and family tombs the most expensive)
- → Headstone: 200 - 2,000 EUR
- → Ongoing costs: concession renewals and, after 3 years, possible exhumation and transfer to an ossuary in temporary graves
Typical total: 2,000 - 5,000 EUR
Cremation (cremação)
- → Funeral service and simple coffin: 800 - 2,000 EUR
- → Crematorium fee: 250 - 600 EUR
- → Urn: 50 - 400 EUR; niche for the urn (optional): 100 - 500 EUR
- → No grave, no headstone, no renewals; ashes may be kept, scattered or placed in a columbarium
Typical total: 1,500 - 3,000 EUR
Cremation has grown by about 60% in a decade and is now the most common choice in Lisbon and Porto. Crematoria exist in Lisbon, Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia, Braga, Coimbra, Leiria, Almada, Setúbal, Évora and Faro, among others; if there is none nearby, the transport adds to the bill.
Financial assistance available
Death subsidy (subsídio por morte): 1,611.39 EUR
A one-off payment of 1,611.39 EUR (3 times the IAS of 537.13 EUR) from Social Security when the deceased had paid contributions.
- → Who can claim: the spouse or civil partner, children, or parents of the deceased
- → Deadline: 180 days from the registration of the death (article 48 of Decree-Law 322/90)
- → How: online on Segurança Social Direta or at any Social Security office, with the death certificate and the claimant's ID
- → No conditions on how the money is spent: it is not tied to the funeral bill
Reimbursement of funeral expenses: up to 1,611.39 EUR
When nobody is entitled to the death subsidy but the deceased had at least one day of contributions, Social Security reimburses the person who paid the funeral, up to 3 times the IAS.
- → Deadline: 90 days from the registration of the death (article 54 of Decree-Law 322/90), shorter than the subsidy
- → Proof required: the funeral home's invoice and receipt in the claimant's name
- → Cannot be combined with the death subsidy
Since Decree-Law 104/2026 (deaths from 9 April 2026), families of stillborn babies, children under 18 and people with a permanent disability who had no contribution record also receive a funeral subsidy of 1,611.39 EUR instead of the previous 268.57 EUR.
Funeral insurance (Seguro Funeral)
Check if the deceased had funeral insurance, either individually or through their employer. Some life insurance policies also include a funeral cost component.
Municipal support
Some municipalities (Junta de Freguesia or Câmara Municipal) offer funeral assistance for families in financial difficulty. Contact your local office to inquire.
Social funerals
The funeral social is not free and is not means-tested. It is a basic service at a regulated maximum price of 481 EUR (pine coffin, transport and the agency's technical services; the cemetery or crematorium fee is charged separately) that every funeral home in Portugal must offer to anyone who asks for it. Municipal support for families in need is a separate scheme.
Tips to manage costs
- Always request written, itemized quotes from at least 2-3 funeral homes
- You are not obligated to use the funeral home at the hospital
- Municipal cemeteries are usually cheaper than private cemeteries
- Consider cremation if cost is a concern (typically 30-40% less expensive)
- The funeral home must provide a transparent price list (it's the law)
- You do not need to purchase the most expensive coffin or services
Watch out for
- Pressure to make quick, expensive decisions at the hospital
- Unnecessary add-on services (premium coffin linings, elaborate flower arrangements)
- Verbal quotes without written confirmation
- Fees that are not clearly explained or itemized
Your rights as a consumer
Caution: Do not rush your decisions
In a moment of grief, it is easy to accept everything the funeral home proposes. Remember: you have rights and time to decide. You are not obliged to accept the first agency.
Fundamental rights
- → Detailed written quote - The funeral home is legally required to provide an itemized quote before any commitment.
- → Freedom of choice - You may compare prices between different funeral homes. Hospitals and care homes cannot impose a specific agency.
- → Refuse unnecessary services - You have the right to decline any service you do not want.
- → File a complaint - If you feel you have been misled, you can complain to DECO (consumer protection) or use the official Complaints Book (Livro de Reclamações).
Practices to avoid
- → Unnecessary embalming - Rarely required in Portugal, but some agencies present it as mandatory.
- → Premium coffin for cremation - If you chose cremation, a simple coffin serves the same purpose.
- → "Mandatory" services that are not - Always question when told something is obligatory.
- → Time pressure - Although there are legal deadlines, most decisions do not need to be made in the first minutes.
Questions to ask the funeral home
- ☑ What is the detailed total cost, including all services?
- ☑ Which services are legally required and which are optional?
- ☑ Are there more affordable alternatives for the coffin/urn?
- ☑ Is transport included in the price?
- ☑ What are the additional cemetery/crematorium costs?
- ☑ Can I see the quote in writing before deciding?
- ☑ Is embalming really necessary in this case?
- ☑ What is the deadline for making this decision?
Repatriation: bringing the body home from Portugal
What it costs and what it involves
When a foreign visitor or resident dies in Portugal, the family can choose a funeral in Portugal or repatriation. International transport requires embalming, a zinc-lined coffin, a laissez-passer for the body from the Portuguese authorities and the receiving country's consular paperwork. Indicative costs, including air freight:
- → UK, Ireland and the rest of Europe: 3,000 - 8,000 EUR
- → United States and Canada: 6,000 - 12,000 EUR
- → Brazil, Africa, Asia, Australia: 5,000 - 15,000 EUR
- → Cremation in Portugal and transport of the ashes: 500 - 2,000 EUR, the cheapest route by far
Check the deceased's travel insurance, credit card cover or expat health plan first: repatriation is often included. Full procedure, documents and consular contacts in our guide to death abroad and repatriation.
Common mistakes that cost money
- → Accepting the hospital's or care home's "usual" agency without a second quote. You are free to choose any funeral home
- → Not asking for the social funeral when the budget is tight. It exists precisely for that, and no proof of need is required
- → Paying for embalming when the funeral takes place within 72 hours in Portugal. It is only compulsory for repatriation and some long delays
- → Choosing a perpetual grave concession without checking the price: a temporary grave or a niche is many times cheaper
- → Missing the 180-day deadline for the death subsidy or the 90-day deadline for reimbursement of expenses
- → Paying the funeral from a personal account without keeping the invoice: funeral expenses are a debt of the estate and can be recovered from the inheritance
Use our funeral cost calculator to estimate the total cost based on your specific needs.
